For those working in the power department, a electrical substation and an industrial transformer is as common as pipes and wrenches for plumbers. A lot of work is placed into the electrical substation though to bring you the power you need to run a load of laundry or watch your favorite television show. This article will discuss how an electrical substation works and the importance of transformers. 

What Is It?

At its heart, an electrical substation is responsible for generating and distributing power. It can change the voltage of electricity from high to low and primarily uses transformers to do this. Those large tank-looking things attached to telephone cables are transformers. They’re responsible for transferring the electricity between two or more circuits. 

The substation is made up of many different types of transformers that aids it in bringing electricity to a consumer’s home. The station itself is usually owned by a power company or sometimes a commercial customer. They’re usually unattended and rely on a third party to keep an eye on them and perform maintenance. 

Types 

There are a few different types of substations. The transmission station essentially exists to connect two or more transmission lines. They can change the voltage they’re receiving and may be simple or complex. The distribution station reduces the voltage still further from the transmission system and sends the voltage to the distribution system. It is essentially the voltage regulator. There are even substations created for railways, since trains require power to use the railways, too. 

The Transformer

As mentioned before, the transformer helps in the transferring of electricity. As with electrical substations, there are different types of transformers as well. The autotransformer provides an increased efficiency of voltage regulation and is also smaller in size than other transformers. A capacitor voltage transformer is used when the voltage requires going through a capacitor before the primary winding. An output transformer is usually used to match the output of an amplification. An instrument transformer gives accurate readings of voltages and safely represents voltages and high power circuits. There are also pulse transformers which are commonly used in ethernet for a computer network. 

Oftentimes, the electricity that a substation creates has a voltage that is higher than what the average home requires. To reduce this voltage and make sure energy is not wasted, transformers are installed. It also allows for greater distance between a substation and the place that requires power, for example, homes. With the world eager to turn to greener forms of energy, there are environmental methods that can be placed to ensure that the transformer is working effectively and efficiently.

As such, transformers play a key role in delivering power to consumers. Ensuring that they are functioning correctly and are high-quality is paramount to an efficient electrical grid. As such, only those with experience and an excellent reputation should be considered when looking to procure transformers. Electricity is dangerous and easy to waste which can be a costly mistake.
