From time immemorial, art has always been a part of people’s lives. It has served well as a way of expressing our emotions. Art is universally accepted as a language of aesthetic. In ancient Greece, the arts were divided into high arts, which were more about the visual, to be appreciated by the eye and the ear, and lesser art forms that were tangible.
Today, there are seven forms of art, up from six known as fine arts, one that was added in the twentieth century. Charles Batteaux coined the phrase fine arts in the 15th century to define all the art forms, which include:
Architecture is top among the fine arts because of the artistry and clever application of aesthetics to create works of art full of harmony and endure for a long time. Architecture for the Greeks was an important aspect of their civilization, and an art form as well. Great buildings such as the Parthenon and great architects such as Parmenio who built Alexandria are part of the great architectural civilization.
The sculpture is a form of art that created 3D forms and shapes and has been around since the ancient days. Today, it is still viewed as a primary art form and visual art.
You can make a sculpture from any material, and you can create it by casting, molding, carving, and assembling using different materials such as stone, clay, or wood.
Out of the seven fine art forms, painting is the most recognized of the disciplines. For ages, humans have used painting as a medium of expression and as a way of capturing real life. History has seen hundreds of artists, and more continue to emerge, making it the most well-known and appreciated form of fine art. Copenhagen Posters are a great example of art forms. Printed on high-quality silk, they grace many homes and business walls.
Music and Dance
Creating beautiful sounds using instruments renders music as one of the seven fine arts. Music has been with humans for as long as humans have been in existence. Both an art that gives immense pleasure and a mode of communication, music is one of the most realistic approaches to the arts. Music includes the blending of instrumental and vocal sounds in a way that produces harmony, rhythm, and melody.
Dance falls into the fine arts category because of its use of rigorous body movements to the tune of music. Dance is used as a means of expression, social interactions, nonverbal communication, and spiritual connection
Creation of literature as an art form draws on words. Most people consider only literature as fine art, but poetry also falls into the same category. Both literature and poetry have brought enormous contributions to humankind, with authors and their works of art giving people a lot of entertainment.
The theater is a mash-up of skills, writing, directing, and acting. The theater was popular in ancient Rome and Greece and its use was a way of conveying a message and as a means of expressing emotions.
Theater focuses on event recreation and fictional narratives and has been a part of the human culture for more than 2000 years.
Cinema is the seventh art that made it to the list of fine arts in the 12th Century by a film critic and theorist called Ricciotto Canudo. Cinema comprises of a sequence of still images that give the illusion of movement and tells a story. The film is a common type of entertainment and films are considered as cultural antiques. They are created for different cultures and are used as a powerful educational and influential tools.
Art is diverse in its description. There are various varieties of art, but the basic essence of art remains to convey messages and emotions and for its aesthetic value. Some of the forms of art have been around since ancient Rome and Greek civilizations. Some were later considered as art forms as human civilization advanced.
The film was not there 2,500 years ago, but as technology advanced, it was recognized as a fine arts form. Sculptures, paintings, and photographs are some of the ways art is captured in still form. They are hung in homes and offices for the aesthetic effect, and to convey powerful messages.
